Devoted to the proficient scholar and poet Thiruvalluvar, this magnificent statue is located on a little island near Kanyakumari. This monument’s overall height stands tall at a mighty height of 133 feet. The statue is rested upon a 38-foot platform. The platform’s 38 feet height represent the 38 chapters of virtue in Thirukkural. The Statue itself is 98-Foot which represents the other 2 chapters namely Wealth and Love representing that with Great virtue wealth and Love is Automatically earned. The right hand of the statue has three fingers pointing towards the sky signifies the three main Division of the Kural text, viz., Aram which is the Virtue, Porul is one’s Wealth, and Inbam is one’s Love. This Magnificent Statue was designed and sculpted by the Indian sculptor Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati, in 1990. It took Almost 150 workers and sculptors working a tiring 16 hours a day. it took Ambasamudram to contribute 5,000 tons of stones, 2,000 tons of high-quality granite stones from Sholinganallur was quarried for the outer portion of the statue. The 3,681 stones were 13-feet long and weighed over 15 tons it’s the largest of the lot, the majority of the stones weighed three to eight tons. Masses of such proportion were previously used in History only seen in the in Mayan temples in South America. An intriguing detail is a 19-foot-high face, with the ears, nose, eyes, mouth, forehead all made of different stones shaped by hand. The most of the work was done mostly by hand, with each carver exhausting down 40 to 50 sharp chisels a day. The sculptor’s team considered that the old-fashioned method on granite stones is the most trustworthy since machines may tend to crack or split the stones and accuracy is hard. Stumps of palmyra tree and poles of Casuarina (ironwood) were utilized for scaffolding. It took 18,000 casuarina poles fastened together with two truckloads of ropes to reach the top of the statue. The statue was placed on its foundation on 19 October 1999. and unveiled in 2000 by TamilNadu C.M.
